If there is one single thing that humans can learn from dogs, it should be their inclination to having a happy disposition. A lot of street dogs go through terrible moments in their life, but once they are given an opportunity for a new beginning, they tend to not dwell in the past. No matter how grim or sad they have gone through, with the right amount of love and treatment, they can shine brighter than the sun.
Sweet Potato is a stray Pit Bull that was taken in by the Humane Society of Charlotte. She is paralyzed from the waist down, thanks to a spinal injury. But despite her physical limitations, Sweet Potato has remained in high spirits.
Fun-loving pooch with an infectious smile
Because Sweet Potato is a very lovable dog, due to her lively and easy-going character, volunteers and staff of the shelter have spoiled her rotten. Many of them usually take the time to visit and play with Sweet Potato. Her popularity with the people of the shelter has given rise to the #SelfiesWithSweetPotato campaign.
Although her injuries meant that she would require specific individual needs, the volunteers and staff did not mind. They would play with her and talk to her. They would also bring her to various treatments, such as acupuncture therapy. To help her walk, Sweet Potato was also measured for a custom-made wheelchair.
What worried the people in the shelter is that most dogs with special needs usually have great difficulty finding a new family. Although they don’t mind caring for her, the best option for the dog would still be finding a permanent home for her. There she would be able to get more personal care.
Luckily, they didn’t have to wait long. Someone learned of the dog’s story and went to the shelter to adopt her. Both the dog and her new dad are happy to have found each other. When the adoption papers were signed, Sweet Potato’s new dad carried her off to the car, and they went home for their happy ending.
We owe a HUGE thank you to Gunnar's wheels! Sweet Potato got her wheels and they're PINK! Our sweet girl tried on her chair this morning and took off right away! A little more practice and she'll be cruising like a pro! A huge thank you to @robertawallhomes for helping us with fundraising and @GuilfordCountyAnimalShelter for helping Sweet Potato get to this point! Keep an eye out – now that our sweet girl's wheels are here, we'll be making her available for foster and/or adoption this week!
